A Kickstarter campaign launching October 1st aims to bring Truther Than Fiction to the stage. The Broadway-style musical places the events of September 11, 2001 within a historical narrative stretching back to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, using the account the public has been asked to believe as the foundation for its comedy, drama and political satire.
The campaign will help fund the musical’s first full-scale live production in Charleston, South Carolina, targeted for spring or summer 2027.
Act I follows Osama bin Laden and the future hijackers during the years preceding the attacks, alongside government and airline employees, passengers, and three fictional thirty-something New Yorkers: Justin, his girlfriend Lucy, and their friend Dave. Justin and Dave are “truthers” before being a truther was cool, while Lucy’s father—a New York City firefighter—goes missing on September 11.
Act II opens with Dick Cheney singing “The Man in Charge” before turning to the cover-ups and extraordinary coincidences, the atmosphere of fear and compulsory patriotism that followed the attacks, and the administration’s search for Osama bin Laden as it marched toward eventual war in Iraq. Meanwhile, those who would become known as “truthers” struggle to understand what happened and what they have been told.
As part of the Kickstarter announcement, a third near-final demo, “Lost,” will be released on September 11, 2026, the 25th anniversary of the attacks. Two demos—“Rental Cars” and “My First Day” —are already available through the musical’s SoundCloud and media page. A bonus track and video will be released alongside “Lost.”
The recurring three-part song moves from the hijackers at the airports into the political aftermath and concludes with a dirge-like commemoration of FDNY Battalion Chief Orio Palmer, The 9/11 Firefighter Whose Name You Should Know

Across its 19-song score, Truther Than Fiction blends brassy show tunes, hip-hop and R&B wordplay, pop, rock, dark comedy, political satire and elegy. It culminates in “Avenge Us,” as people called upon to clear the wreckage—many now sick or dying—recognize that the official account leaves critical questions unanswered.
